My invariable answer is "No", and now that I think about it, it is because the traditional teaching philosophy indicates that you don’t need a calculator when you have to compute an integral. The advent of immensely powerful Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) is giving us more and more reasons to switch out teaching styles to a new paradigm, where the ideas are presented together with real visual computer-generated representations, and where the emphasis is put on the concepts rather than the symbolic manipulation.

For example, in a typical first year college Calculus class, it takes a great deal of effort to go over a series of techniques that help the students to understand integration. Those techniques are clearly mechanical and repetitive, but yet students have a hard time understanding the main ideas. Nowadays, software like Mathematica and others are capable to solve symbolically some very complicated integrals, which go way beyond what an accomplished first year calculus student can do.

The future of CAS should also include a way to use all this "intelligence" used to solve complicated problems to also being able to "explain" how to arrive to the answer.

The quick formulas are useful only for comparing natural gas to wood pellets since their fuel efficiencies are similar.

If you are comparing fuels with different efficiencies, all you have to do is find the coefficient of the fuel efficiency percentage rating. Please don’t run screaming out the door because I said coefficient. Just divide 1 by the percentage’s decimal equivalent to obtain the coefficient.

For example: The fuel efficiency rating for natural gas and wood pellets is 85%.

If you divide 1 by .85 you get a coefficient of 1.18. Now plug this into the quick formula to obtain the effective, or true cost, of the fuel you are burning.

Wood Pellets: $198 divided by 16 x 1.18 = $14.60

Natural Gas: $1.1813 x 10.30 x 1.18 = $14.36

By expanding the quick formula to include the effective cost calculation, the spread between the two fuels has now widened to $0.24.

Assuming fuel prices don’t go crazy, you could save as much as $75 during the remainder of this heating season by switching from wood pellets back to natural gas.

How to deal with difficult people part 3 - the passive aggressive

Thirty-three year old Roberto had promised his wife Tina that he would be home after work in time for her to attend her weekly "women's group" at her church. Having only one automobile, Tina was completely at the mercy of Roberto's promise.

You guessed it! Roberto did not show up until 8:45 PM-way too late for Tina to attend her meeting. Rather than being apologetic, however, Roberto explained to Tina (who was outraged at this point) that he "couldn't help it" because "I had to help a friend out who's car had broken down." He lamented "How could I let Michael down? He was best man at our wedding."

Was Tina being unreasonable in her anger? After all, Roberto was helping out a mutual friend. Yet, looking deeper into this situation, turns out that Roberto really didn't want Tina to attend those meetings because it was "putting ideas into her head."

Yet, he couldn't just forbid Tina from attending, so he handled the situation in an underhanded way-sabotaging her attendance in a way that would still make him look good.

After all, he could argue, what reasonable person would get mad at someone who was late because he was helping out a friend?

The Anatomy Of Passive Aggression

Passive-Aggression is a psychological mechanism for handling hostility or anger in an underhanded or devious way that is hard for others to prove. Sometimes the passive-aggressive is aware of what he or she is doing, and other times not.

Yet, the result is the same-things are sabotaged by the passive-aggressive and it somehow is never their fault. A really good passive aggressive is very slippery with excuses, justifications, or alternative reasons for why things go awry. Passive-Aggression may not be expressed directly in behavior-but in words or humor. Sarcasm which communicates hostility is often a tool of the passive-aggressive person, as are jokes made at your expense.

Some common examples of passive - aggressive behavior:

* When conversing with someone who is angry at you, they leave out important information which gives you the wrong impression.

* Talking behind the back of a coworker in a harmful way - gossiping.

*Exaggerating the faults of your spouse (behind his or her back) to your parents while maintaining "sweetness" toward your spouse.

* Playing dumb or inadequate to frustrate someone or gain advantage. .

* Upset with your wife's weight, you "affectionately" call her "pork chop" in public in a way that appears playful on the surface.

Dealing with passive-aggressive behavior is extremely challenging because a really good passive aggressive is very slippery. Often, too, you may not be sure if you have been the victim of passive aggressive behavior-or not. You may be feeling angry and upset, but not sure why or if it is justified.

How do you tell? One way to identify it is to look for patterns in someone's behavior - not just isolated incidents. For instance, if Roberto generally is dependable and is home on time for Tina to attend her meetings, the one "miss" may not be motivated by passive-aggression. However, if he often sabotages Tina's attendance while denying he is doing so, a behavior pattern is evident. What should you do to deal with passive - aggression once you have identified it?

Three tips to cope with passive aggressive behavior:

Tip #1- Directly confront the behavior and ask if the person is angry at you. For instance, ask "You called me pork chop tonight. Do you have issues with my weight?"

Tip #2. Be on guard and don't trust what the person says or commits to. Develop a Plan B. For instance, Tina could have arranged for someone else to pick her up for the meeting in case Roberto didn't make it home on time.

Tip #3. Use assertive communication skills to let a person know how what they do affects you and makes you feel. Try something like "I heard you repeat something that I told you in confidence. That really hurt me; please don't do it again because I would like to trust you."

North America's attitude toward interracial relationships has been changing remarkably with every new generation. Although only 5% of the marriages in the United States are interracial, today's college students have an entirely different perspective of what constitutes acceptable relationships. Currently, almost half of all college students would be willing to become involved in an interracial relationship, while one quarter of college students have already been involved in an interracial relationship.

Since 1967, when the United States' Supreme Court legalized interracial marriages, minority enrollment in North American colleges and the tolerance for multiculturalism have increased, leading to a more positive environment for interracial relationships. The black population, although a minority, are twice as likely as whites to be willing to become involved in an interracial relationship. This acceptance may be attributed to a larger proportion of whites available to a minority number of blacks, more exposure and thus an increased comfort with white culture, as well as a greater ease for blacks to fit into the white culture, than visa versa.

College and university provide unique social microclimates for students. The proportions of minority groups in post secondary institutions tend to be higher than in mainstream society, and thus increase student exposure to different cultures. Cohabitation for students is also non normative, in comparison to mainstream society and may increase the willingness for students to form different kinds of relationships that may not normally occur outside of these institutions. Therefore, college life provides an increase in the daily exposure and interaction between diverse cultural groups and may cause for a greater likelihood of interracial relationships.

The willingness to become involved in an interracial relationship had no doubt increased over time, but the acceptance of these relationships remains somewhat taboo in society. Movies such as "Jungle Fever" and "Guess Who?" demonstrate that interracial dating persists as an issue in mainstream society and continues to make people uncomfortable.

Although almost half of college students are willing to become involved in interracial relationships, parents continue to have a great deal of influence over their children's decisions. With only 5% of marriages in the United States being interracial, it is unlikely that their offspring will be encouraged to pursue interracial relationships. Only time will tell what lays ahead for North Americas multicultural student bodies.

Why so many states are legalizing gambling

There are currently 13 states that have legalized gambling and they have over 450 casinos between those states, and they bring in 72 billion dollars a year.

From this money states get extra money for road repair, schools and many other things that a state needs money to fix and maintain.

In the last 10 years there have also been a large number of Indian casinos being granted licenses in states that do not have legalized gambling, which means the only place t gamble in those states is in the Indian Casino, and they do not pay taxes on that money.

Many states are waking up and realizing that there is a very profitable business out there that they are not getting any revenue from, and not only does it bring money into the state it also creates thousands of jobs for each casino that opens. So for a state with a high unemployment rate this means more people are working and less of the stats money needs to be spent on these people, again a win for the state and the people.

It also means more money for the state to feed kids a hot meal at lunch and the money to put new books in the classrooms and maybe to build more schools. This money is also used in some states to hire more police officers.

Legalized gambling besides bringing in more money to the government in taxes also brings money into the community gamblers will use services such as hotels, restaurants and other local attractions while they are in the area. This can bring a major boost to a small starving economy separate from that of the casino.

Another reason why many states are pushing to make gambling legal is to attempt to wipe out the illegal gambling business. Many people feel that if gambling is legalized there is no reason for people to go to sleazy and dangerous back room casinos.

These type of places are becoming harder and harder for the police to find and as soon as they do find them, they will either pack up and change locations or another will just take their place. Another bad thing about illegal casinos s that there is no one monitoring to make sure the casino is not cheating their players.

In many cases police have raided illegal casinos and found that all the table and card games are rigged for the casino to win, and if this is ever discovered the casinos operators have in the past committed murder to keep their secrets, and most people fear for their lives and refuse to cooperate with the police.

Legalized gambling is monitored to make sure both the player and the house are playing an honest game.

Do not let all of this make you think that gambling has no downside. A lot of this money has to go to treatment for people, who develop gambling addictions, and most cities with a casino do usually see a rise in crime in those areas, so more police officers are not just a luxury it is a necessity.
