Carl Veno’s book, Invisible Ink, provides an insider’s view of the newspaper world during the author’s 25-years as a journalist and editor - at a time when major events were having dramatic affects on American society. Told in a no-nonsense matter-of-fact manner, the tales of experience are intermingled with the author’s family history, including the immigration of his Italian ancestors to America more than 125 years ago. Reminiscent moments clearly reveal Carl’s fond memories of growing up and his youthful love of New York.

Various newspaper readership "wars" were destroying and absorbing each other during an incredible age of change and discovery for the American people. Exciting and newsworthy issues including men and women learning to co-exist in the workplace, mobsters, racism, riots, war and space travel were fighting for newspaper space. Between all this the author reveals inner office politics within the industry. We all know from our own experience, differences occur at places of employment – management issues, co-worker competition, etc. – and it is all here. Yet on top of this the reader is introduced to interesting and eccentric characters, complicated work-related relationships and office love affairs. The epilogue closes nicely with the fate of some of the newspapers mentioned in the book.

Prior to entering the world of journalism, Carl spent time as a barber, boxer and army trooper. Not including his free-lance work and lecturing, Veno was employed by eight newspapers (some of which won many awards) and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize during his career. Carl is now retired and able to pursue his love of exercise through jogging and continues to write books.

What do we know so far? We found the best approach to language learning is to learn Spanish the very same way you learned your native tongue. Lots and lots of intensive listening without speaking comes first. This is how you learned your native language. This is how children instinctively approach learning a second language.

By the time speaking comes, you will have mastered the fundamentals of the target language. You will know how to use parts of speech before you know what those parts of speech are even called. You have got to find a way to mimic this process. You have to find a way whereby you can learn Spanish in the same manner in which you learned your native language.

This is what it means to start with the horse and not the cart. To start with the cart—the traditional way in which foreign languages are taught in the United States (and virtually all over the planet)—will make you a good interpreter of written text but you will not develop speaking skills. To start with the cart could possibly short-circuit your speaking ability forever.

So how does one start? Does one go back and become a child again to learn Spanish the natural way? Is it even possible to come anywhere close to finding a method of language learning that mimics the natural, child-like manner in which we learned our native language? There is.

I know you’ve been thinking the whole time you’ve been reading that this sounds more and more like a sales pitch. If that is what you have been thinking, you are absolutely right. Let me assure you I have no financial interest in what I am about to share.

My interest is this: Americans are expatriating to Mexico in record numbers. They are transforming entire cities into something quite un-Mexican. It is because Americans cannot or will not learn the language. The consequence of their Spanish illiteracy is that they congregate into American enclaves and create “Little Americas” all over Mexico.

I want that to stop. I am convinced it can if Americans learn Spanish in a non - threatening, natural, fluid, and almost child-like way. That is my interest and is my motive for sharing these methods with you.

Remember this quote from a previous chapter:

“In a study by Petoskey, 1974; Winitz, 1981; J. Gary and N. Gary, 1981, they postulated that the most effective methodology for the adult learner of a second language is one in which listening (that “period of silence”) before any speaking is done.”

There is a home study course that does exactly this. There is absolutely no speaking in the course. There is just listening. This course mimics that “period of silence” which research shows children go through when learning their native language. First, there is intensive listening and observing. Then, there is the association of sound, word, sight, and actions that teach you the necessary vocabulary and grammar long before you begin to speak a word of Spanish. The course also takes into account that, as an adult, you have distinct advantages over children because of your more advanced brain development.

Power of a dream

I recently spoke to a Youth Leadership Group, and I was deeply inspired listening to the

dreams that the teenagers had for the future. While I was presenting, I felt the group of

teenagers begin to realize that it is ok to dream and be proud of what you have done in

your life and where you want to go in life.

As adults, we need to realize that the power of a dream will enable you to achieve whatever

your ultimate "WHY" in life is. By the age 25, most people lose all of their dreams and fall

into a rut. From the age 25-65, people generally go back and forth to work and say to

themselves," I wish...if only I could have...if only I knew then what I know now," and

numerous other lamentations as to why they do not feel fulfilled in life. The key in life to

feeling fulfilled is to simply listen to your inner spirit and make your daily work in life something

that you love to do and will help you achieve your DREAMS!

The key word in that sentence is DREAMS! Too many people when asked, "Where do you see

yourself 2-5 years from now" give the answer, "Just let me make it to this weekend." The underlying

reason that they don’t know where they are going to be is because they have no dreams. This

can be extremely frightening! Each of the teenagers that I spoke to this week has dreams for their life

and where they see themselves in the future. As a professional speaker and business coach, my ultimate

outcome is to empower people to find their WHY in life -- to catapult them to attain their dreams in life.

I also spoke to the group about how important it is to be around a mastermind team, which will push

you on and let you know it is awesome you have a dream.

As an overall population, over 95% of adults have no mastermind team but they have group

of so-called friends, who will tell every reason why they should never try to win and to just accept

their life. You need to stop right now and take a personal inventory of your life and ask yourself three

life-changing questions:

1) WHAT is my WHY in LIFE!!! (Why I am getting up each and every day?)

2) WHO is my Mastermind Team?

3) WHERE do I see myself 2-5 years from now?

Why?

Because he understood that the only way to write content with a key phrase count that high would be to stuff the article and force the use of the key phrase even when it would not be normal to do so.

Perhaps you have been to websites that have content that are filled to overflowing with a particular keyword or phrase. The articles are no fun to read and can’t really be considered knowledge-based. These articles are, in fact, only present for the benefit of search engines.

Most experts indicate 4-5 keywords or phrases per article or 2-3% (whichever allows for the most use). Essentially you should not use more than 3 keywords or phrases per one hundred words.

Then at the end of the tenancy, both the landlord and the tenant have to inform the scheme administrator that either the whole deposit is returned to one party or part of the deposit returned to both parties and the scheme administrator must pay out in accordance with the agreement within 10 days of receiving notification.

If agreement cannot be reached between the landlord and the tenant the scheme administrator will retain the deposit until either the tenant or landlord obtains a final court order specifying the proportion of the deposit to which each is entitled. The scheme administrator will then immediately pay out in accordance with the court order.

Where a scheme administrator returns a deposit, they must do so with interest added at a rate yet to be specified by Government. Any interest additional to this will be retained by the scheme administrator and can be used to fund the administration of the TDS scheme.

The TDS Scheme is being introduced as an ammendment to the Housing Act 2004.

In our view, the short-term result of all these regulations will be that poorer standard properties will close as the landlord will be either unable or unwilling to comply. In the longer term, the number of properties may well rise again and be at a higher standard than the current stock of such properties.

Having said that, landlords are certain to increase rents in a move to offset the additional compliance costs they are faced with.

How to make the switch to working online is going to be a short series on how to move from your 9-5 job to a life of freedom and flexibility of working online. This is how I made my move and how you can too, no BS involved.

First, it isn’t working online but rather playing online and earning money. If I did not love getting up in the morning doing what I am doing, I wouldn’t last a month. When people first start out online, they look at the likes of John Chow and Jeremy Schoemaker and think, “I can do this.” What most people realize after about a month of trying is it doesn’t work out that way. Earning money online can be a lot harder than it appears.

First Step:

Start! I know that seems basic, but it is amazing that most people only think and talk about making a life change for the better. So get going and do it! Learn about the different ways you can make money online and what you are capable of doing.

Second Step:

Find what you love to do. Motivation is a huge factor in success. When you love your work, you aren’t working. Having fun is probably the most important aspect of doing what you love. Besides loving what you do, you will often know a lot about that particular niche, adding even more to your credibility and knowledge to the trends in that market. Knowing as much as you can about your niche market gives you the edge on top of the passion to pursuit it. It amazes me that even after blogging for a short period of time you will see so many other bloggers come and go as they slowly give up on their pursuit of money. It’s a pursuit of a dream that will carry you through.

Third Step:

Phase into your online work. I didn’t just wake up one day and start working online. I started by reading blogs. Then I started subscribing to blogs that I liked. I opened up a free blogging account on Blogger. com and other sites, learning the skills of creating a fluid site online. I learned how to and how not to make money online (selling ebooks is not going to get you anywhere unless you know how to market online well). Make the shift from part-time Internet entrepreneur to full-time self employed Internet marketer. Start small and allow yourself to have a life outside of the Internet and your work. As you grow and expand online, you will have to be the judge of when to quit your day job and pursuit your online business. I did this after roughly 4-5 months. I timed vacation and paychecks to give me the most coverage and financial buffer I could. Fourth Step:

You may find that in order to generate the income you want, you only spend 4 hours a day working for it. It is important to find that balance and treat that time like it is pure gold, because it is.

Fifth Step:

Diversify. The days where you set up a store front and sold hardware supplies to local people are fading fast. In a world that changes in a matter of minutes online, you cannot afford to be stagnate. As soon as you start generating a decent income from your flagship blog or virtual business, you should be creating the next. When you have 4-5 different but related businesses online, you protect yourself from failure due to lose of income. If one of those businesses or income streams disappears, you still have others to carry your through until your next idea is put into place. The winds of business change so quickly online that no one knows for sure what the next year will bring. If people claim to know, they are lying.

Sixth Step:

Give back. Giving back is a crucial part of business and branding. Giving back doesn’t always have to involve money, it can be in time to help charitable causes, giving advice to others, talking with and answering questions from customers, sending thank you cards and notes and just about anything else. Never forget where you were at one point, and remember to give credit to those who helped get you there.

Featured at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show, a concept Microbus evoked all sorts of “ooohs and aaaahs” from visitors; it was this same type of reaction that has convinced Volkswagen to go forward with production.

As of this writing, there is a battle raging within Volkswagen-land as to how much the Microbus will incorporate the retro look. Seeing how the New Beetle succeeded in the US, but flopped in Europe will VW have the courage to stand tall and bring back the hippie hauler? Or, will VW cave in and produce just another run-of-the-mill vehicle that only hints at its past glory?

Time will tell, but my advice to VW is this: get it built now before us hippie dippy types are too old to climb into it.

Unless, of course, the Microbus can be outfitted with a wheelchair ramp.
